The tour explores the history of downtown Ottawa, including long-vanished shantytowns; the dangerous building of “The Deep Cut,” the local portion of the Rideau Canal; and the fate of the Indigenous people who occupied these lands.
Learn of the men who toiled and died digging the canal. Hear the stories behind street names. (A bunch were named for a widow’s kids, another for an early-1800s best-selling novel.)
Meet at The Elgin Street Market, in Boushey Square at Elgin and Waverley. The tour starts at 11 a.m. It lasts about 70 minutes and covers 1.2 kms.
There is no fee, but donations to the Centretown Community Association are appreciated.
