May 2025
Happy May Centretowners,
5th Season for Centretown NeighbourWoods Team
Members of the Neighbourhwoods team at the 2025 Earth Day Festival
This spring the Centretown NeighbourWoods Team will be returning for our 5th season. The season started with a presence at the Earth Day Festival in McNabb Park on April 27. Our volunteers were on hand to explain our project to all who stopped by.
This year we are continuing our survey of trees in the Centretown area, to build a database on our trees and to advocate for an enhanced tree canopy.
Our season starts on May 24, with a training session for new and returning volunteers in McNabb Park. Teams will work during the summer and into September to collect data on trees on both public and private land.
We also help promote the City’s own free tree programs: the "Trees in Trust" program, which is for trees in the right of way on street frontage, as well as its new “Plant your Place” program, which is meant for private property.
In addition we are planning outreach to various businesses and institutions to promote tree planting in our neighbourhood.
We are always looking for new volunteers. If you are interested in learning more about trees, meeting your neighbours, and taking action to help protect and enhance Centretown’s trees, contact us at neighbourwoods@centretowncitizens.ca
Elgin Street Market Returns
The Elgin Street Market is back for its fifth season in Boushey Square at the corner of Elgin and Waverly.
The market is the only farmer's market in Centretown, and will run every Sunday from June 15, 2025 to October 12, 2025 from 9am to 1pm, rain or shine.
As always, the market will feature a range of vendors: fresh produce, prepared foods, baked goods, coffee, various crafts, and other items.
We will also be conducting yoga by donation in Jack Purcell Park at 10 am on Sunday mornings, beginning June 29th through to September.
Back by popular demand will also be Jack Hanna's history walking tours, leaving from the market each week at 11am with rotating itineraries from week to week.
If you are interested in volunteering with the market, or if you are a community organization looking to book the community table, please email ccca@centretowncitizens.ca. We are looking forward to a fantastic market season and hope to see you there!
Join us For a Plant Sale at Minto Park
People shopping at the Plant Sale from 2024
This year the Minto Park Plant Sale will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2025 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Do you have plants that can be donated? Please contact Stephen Thirlwall (near Bronson Ave.), stephen.thirlwall@gmail.com, Michelle Kirkman (Golden Triangle), Michelle.kirkman@sympatico.ca or Jack Hanna (Golden Triangle) jack.2014@icloud.com, to arrange for a time to drop off your plants. Thank you!
We are also looking for your help in the following areas:
PRESALE
Perennials for sun or shade * if you plan to divide and donate some of your perennials, repotting them several weeks before the sale will make them more presentable.
Any extra annuals, vegetable plants (such as tomatoes and peppers) and/or herbs of all kinds you might have (planted from seed or store- bought) would be most welcome.
Houseplants also seem to sell well and even tree seedlings.
We are also looking for fancy plant pots, gardening books and garden decorations you no longer have need of.
DAY OF SALE
We will need volunteers with cars to transport the plants to Minto Park
We will need volunteers to set up the tables, arrange plants for sale, do some pricing and, of course, sell the plants.
Set up starts around 8 am. Clean up starts around 2:30pm.
We will need CCA members to help staff the CCA table at the plant sale.
It involves being at the table and telling passers by about the great things the CCA does and encouraging folks to join the CCA or make a donation. If you’re not sure if you know enough about the CCA to volunteer, you probably do!
E-mail ccca@centretowncitizens.ca for more information or to signup to volunteer. Help make this fundraiser a success.
Help deliver The BUZZ!
The Centretown BUZZ is delivered every month to homes and businesses in the neighbourhood by a dedicated team of volunteers. There are various sections between Lisgar Street and the Queensway where extra volunteers are needed.
Delivering newspapers is an excellent way to exercise and get fresh air – and to get to know your neighbours and neighbourhood a little bit better.
You can also help by ensuring that The BUZZ is available in your apartment or condominium.
Here’s some frequently asked questions, including how to sign up: https://centretownbuzz.ca/delivery.
