November 2024
Dear Centretowners,
Join us for the CCA's Annual General Meeting!
On Tuesday, November 12, join us at the CCA's AGM to learn more about the association's work and vote for the new board members and president.*
The virtual doors will open at 6:30 and the meeting will be called to order at 7:00 pm.
The keynote speaker for this year's AGM is Sueling Ching, President and CEO of the Ottawa Board of Trade. The Ottawa Board of Trade released its report “A Living Capital”. Estimates suggest that more than 40,000 people will move into Centretown in the coming 10 years. Sueling will talk about that report and share reflections on ways that Centretown can accommodate this significant population growth.
For more information, please contact ccca@centretowncitizens.ca.
*Note: Only members who renewed their membership by November 5 of this year are eligible to vote.
Letter opposing Bill 212
The CCA has sent a letter to Ontario's Transportation Minister opposing Bill 212, which restricts cities' abilities to install bike lanes. Concerns include climate change, safety, and keeping local decision making in Ottawa.
Elgin Street Market Goes Online for Winter
Reminder! During the winter months you can order local vegetables, dairy, meats, fruit, sauces, fresh bread, and prepared meals online at www.ottstreetmarkets.ca. Orders are available for pick-up Saturdays at Wisetown Cafe, on Elgin near Waverley. Home delivery also is an option, for $8.
Protecting Centretown's Urban Forest
Members of the CCA’s NeighbourWoods team have documented the shocking shrinkage of the urban forest in Centretown over the past half decade. They have compared trees in Centretown that appear on the 2017 GeoOttawa maps with the reality today. They found that 24.5 percent of the trees in the City Right of Way along streets have vanished and not been replaced.
The CCA is forming a working group to get more trees planted in Centretown. The work will entail contacting large property management companies and other businesses and institutions.
